The challenge

Develop a set of tools to encourage and assist young drivers and their coaches to develop and practice driving skills in a range of conditions.

The approach

We identified and then carried out research with the target customers for the app, namely young drivers and their coaches. The primary personas are ‘Matt’ and ‘Dan’ who are in the highest crash risk group by age (16-18) and gender (male). They are risk takers but not on the ‘too hard to reach’ category i.e. they don’t need personalised and multiple interventions.

We looked at the context in which they lived such as their influences from popular culture and how they used technology. We also mapped out the current state customer touch points across the driver licensing service to ensure we took a holistic approach to our solution.

Research was mainly with secondary and tertiary students and their coaches (mainly parents) across NZ (including South Auckland and the West Coast) to make sure that what we designed was fit for purpose.

The outcome

The key deliverables so far are drive.govt.nz and the Drive Community Toolkit The Drive Mobile App is currently under development but lookout for this when it launches in 2019!
